Are you wondering if your printing device supports one of the DesignMerge VDP (Variable Data Printing) output formats?

Meadows Publishing Solutions has posted “Golden Masters” of the various DesignMerge VDP formats that you may download to test on your printing devices to help you determine which DesignMerge VDP output formats your digital printers can process successfully.

Here is a link to the DesignMerge Golden Master VDP samples:

To use any of the Golden Mater VDP samples, simply download the associated file by clicking on the provided link. Then, send the downloaded file to your digital printer for processing/printing and compare the results to the PDF Preview of the job (which is also available on the DesignMerge Golden Masters page on the Meadows web site). If they compare, then your system most likely supports that VDP output format.

These samples will additionally assist you in determining which options to select on the DesignMerge Print Driver dialog windows. You can also find details regarding the DesignMerge Print Drivers, and the various options that are available for each one, in their manuals which are available in the DesignMerge product folder which the DesignMerge installer places in your Applications or Program Files folder.

Why DesignMerge Is The Best Solution For VDP

When it comes to variable data printing, we are obviously big fans of plug-in technology, as it’s been our exclusive focus for almost 16 years.  But there’s another reason for our long term commitment … You, the professional digital printer that’s trying to compete, provide state-of-the-art solutions to your market, and make a profit.

With DesignMerge, you’ll be able to reach all three goals efficiently.  Let’s take a closer look at DesignMerge to back up our position.

DesignMerge is a fantastic VDP tool for a large variety of VDP jobs, and has no limit on the number of records it can process.  The average output speed of DesignMerge is much faster than the speed of most digital presses on the market today.  However, as much as we like DesignMerge, we also feel that eventually, customers wishing to fully support VDP may ultimately wish to utilize more than one application.

For instance, if typically running VDP jobs with 50,000 or more data records, that are needed within a couple of hours, it may be necessary to look at a high-speed VDP application.  While faced with some limitations, the trade-off will be that the output can be produced more quickly.

The “templated” approach to VDP addresses an entirely different segment of the market, where a VDP template is created and stored on the digital press.  Then, an automated data stream is fed to the press and the entire merge and print process happens there.  This approach is even more limited than using a standalone VDP application, but it does offer advantages for automated processes where the document design is relatively simple and the variable data is minimal.

DesignMerge has output drivers for several template formats, but a manufacturers code is required to install on your printing press.

Speedy Print is a commercial digital printer located in Milwaukee, serving the southeast Wisconsin business market since 1972. Their customers include legal professionals, insurance companies, civic organizations, non-profits and general business. Speedy Print offers full design and marketing services as part of an increased interest from their customers who are looking to outsource design and variable data printing. Print quality and customer service is at the heart of their business.

Following is a short interview with Keith Ernst, President, and Amy Messick, Graphics Manager, at Speedy Print Milwaukee, discussing how DesignMerge has helped meet their unique challenges.

What business challenges have you faced in the VDP market?

Our biggest challenge has been educating customers on the benefits of using Variable Data Printing (VDP). Our customers need up-front information on what VDP is, how it works, and what the results might be. In these economic times it can be hard to convince customers of the direct economic benefit that VDP offers them. Once we have been successful in promoting VDP, an additional challenge has been getting our customers to give us properly formatted files.

Why did you choose DesignMerge for your VDP implementation?

Our graphic design and variable printing business has increased steadily year after year. DesignMerge variable data software has enabled us to stay ahead of our competition by offering cutting-edge technology and services.

We initially purchased DesignMerge for two particular clients. One is an insurance company that wanted to personalize ID cards for their customers. With DesignMerge, the ease of printing is amazing, and we have printed over 5000 cards without error. The second company is an Internet company wanting Internet access codes that feature barcodes, where the barcode changes with each access code. Last year we printed over 100,000 barcodes, again without a single error.

As a result of our positive experience with the above-mentioned customers, we have developed additional relationships with other clients using VDP solutions. It really has become an essential component of the services we provide to our clients.

What were the results of your DesignMerge implementation?

DesignMerge has helped us gain an additional 15-20% in new business, while enabling us to increase the number of jobs that we receive from our established customers, as well. The positive trend in personalized marketing will continue to help Speedy Print grow. In 2010 we expect an excellent return on our DesignMerge investment resulting in continued expansion of our business!

Following is a short interview with John Marcucci, President of Chocolate Covers, discussing how DesignMerge has helped meet their unique challenges with a solution that has resulted in increased profits and expanding business opportunities.

What business challenges have you faced in the VDP market?

Chocolate Covers saw a change in the commercial print industry as their customers began asking for personalization in their marketing campaigns. In an effort to keep abreast of this trend and differentiate ourselves from the competition, we decided to research variable data solutions. We wanted a more efficient way of numbering event and raffle ticket jobs, and more creativity in personalized marketing materials and newsletters.

Why did you choose DesignMerge for your VDP implementation?

There are several variable data solutions on the market today. However, after researching several solutions, we purchased a digital press and DesignMerge variable data software. We were impressed with DesignMerge’s ease of use, fast set-up and efficient processing. We run DesignMerge with InDesign on a Macintosh computer. The most exceptional part of DesignMerge is the phenomenal support we receive, which is critical. That alone was a major factor in going with DesignMerge.

What were the results of your DesignMerge implementation?

Our customers are bringing in additional personalized jobs that now represent 5% of our overall business. I see that percentage growing as customers get more personal with their marketing campaigns. With our solutions in place, we are positioned to take on any variable data job that comes to us. DesignMerge gives Chocolate Covers the opportunity to add more value and options to our customer’s projects.   All we can say is…”SWEET!”

Best Variable Data Solution for the Offset Printer

One of my favorite conversations I had at this year’s Graph Expo Show was speaking with traditional offset printers looking to tap into the hot variable data market. Most of these printers have clients who are looking for preferred vendors to produce personalized postcards, form letters, and other direct mail marketing projects. As we were talking, I could sense their frustration as they shared what they imagined to be additional time, resources, and costs associated with variable data. I enjoyed explaining to these companies just how easy and economical it is to produce efficient and effective projects using the DesignMerge Pro solution.

DesignMerge Pro is a plug-in for Adobe InDesign and QuarkXpress, two applications that graphic artists and desktop operators have been using their entire working career. Getting started with DesignMerge Pro is very easy and our solutions support all the style guides and design effects, so you don’t have to worry about jeopardizing your client’s design integrity.

Other robust capabilities, like Conditional Rules Logic (menu driven, you can skip night school for programming) and CopyFit (multiple options, giving you eye pleasing capabilities to fix overset conditions), come standard in DesignMerge Pro. In addition, we support the most popular VDP outputs, including PPML and VPS, and can output to practically every RIP and digital printer…you know, that machine in the back that produces the office football pool sheets! Depending on your needs, investment in our solution can be made for under a thousand dollars, and can be scaled to meet your needs as your VDP business grows.

It was great seeing many faces turn from frustration to excitement knowing they can count on DesignMerge now and in the future.
