Adventure Life (www.adventure-life.com) is an adventure travel company that provides custom and small group tours in Latin America and Africa, and small-ship cruises throughout the world. They offer over 100 different itineraries in South & Central America and Africa, as well as hundreds of small-ship cruises to less conventional destinations such as the Arctic, Antarctica and Alaska.

Custom catalogs are tailored to an individual’s interests. Data captured online is processed through the DesignMerge software using a system developed by Meadows Publishing Solutions. The end-result is a fully personalized travel guide and brochure complete with variable text, articles and graphics, all based on the visitor’s trip selections. Final PDF files are automatically produced and made available for electronic delivery, and are also printed digitally. The results of this software solution have been so successful that Adventure Life was recently named a gold winner for their customized trip catalogs by Travel Weekly’s 2013 Magellan Awards!

Following is a short interview with Aaron Conway, Chief Technology Officer at Adventure Life, discussing how the DesignMerge software has allowed them to create a custom solution for their unique marketing requirements.

arrowbulletWhat business challenges have you faced in the Variable Data Printing (VDP) market?

Our initial challenge was finding a solution that could not only handle variable data in a document, but would also allow a variable number of pages and variable page order. We were not able to find a prepackaged solution, but Meadows was able to work with our requirements and modify DesignMerge to fit our needs.

arrowbulletWhy did you choose DesignMerge for your VDP implementation?

We chose DesignMerge because of the confidence that the Meadows staff gave us. They assured us that what we were trying to accomplish with our project was attainable and could be customized within a reasonable time frame.

arrowbulletWhat were the results of your DesignMerge implementation?

We have had a very positive response to the custom catalogs. Each traveler’s needs are unique for every trip they go on and since information is constantly changing, and we are always adding and updating trips, providing custom catalogs gets the latest and most relevant information out to our customers. They see that we are able to meet their individual needs at a very customized level. The tailor-made catalog is the first step in ensuring that we offer experiences that are inspiring, authentic and unique.

arrowbulletDo you see this aspect of your business growing in the future?

We are constantly adding to our catalog, so our presentation materials will continue to expand. We have been very pleased with the results of our custom catalogs and plan to continue to use DesignMerge to produce each one individually. It seems like DesignMerge is a very flexible tool and there is great potential to use it in other aspects of variable data printing.

Sure! To see an example of some of the variable pages in an Adventure Life brochure, please click here.

“The DesignMerge Software has far exceeded our expectations, as well as expanded our capabilities in the realm of variable data production. The easy-to-navigate interface, combined with its robust functionality make it user-friendly and very much capable of processing practically all document types and layouts that contain multiple variable components.

We have used DesignMerge to create new templates for all of our outgoing mail applications. We also use it on a weekly basis for all of our internal correspondence to over 300,000 members and partners. DesignMerge, in my opinion, far surpasses all other software applications that offer similar functionality. I highly recommend DesignMerge for any and all companies that require variable data production.”

DesignMerge Bar Code Keyword Variable Link … ROCKS!

January 11, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

DesignMerge provides a built-in feature that allows you to create variable PostNet and USPS Intelligent Mail Bar Codes based on data taken from a database file. When used in conjunction with the Meadows Bar Code Module, DesignMerge can also create other popular bar codes, such as Code 128, Code 39, UPC, and Interleaved 2 of 5.

If your database file contains a field with data that is already formatted for a particular type of bar code, then we do not recommend using a Bar Code Keyword Variable Link. Instead, use a normal Text Variable Link to merge this data “as is”, and apply the bar code font that is recommended by the application that produced the bar code data. If the bar code data in your database file is missing any required Start and Stop characters, you may use the Variable Link “Add Prefix” and “Add Suffix” feature to add these characters automatically; be careful to use the appropriate character that your bar code font requires.

If your database file does not contain a field with data that is already formatted for a particular type of bar code, but does contain the data that the bar code is to represent, then you may use the DesignMerge Bar Code Keyword Variable Link feature to convert that data to the appropriate format. To use this feature successfully, all of the data that is to be encoded for the variable bar code must be in a single field in your database file. The length of the data that is provided by the database will determine the length of the variable bar code. Please note that each of the various Bar Code Keyword Variable Links require a specific type of data. If any data is not valid for conversion to a particular bar code format, DesignMerge will display a warning when the invalid data is merged into the Bar Code Keyword Variable Link. For an example of setting up and using a Bar Code Keyword Variable Link, please see Tutorial #2 (the Postcard Tutorial) in your DesignMerge Tutorial Manual, which is available in the DesignMerge product folder on your system.

When I merge my document using DesignMerge, my line breaks disappear between variable text links. Why?

December 29, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

If a line-ending character is included inside a text link, the line-ending character will be removed when you merge the document because incoming variable data will replace all of the characters that are inside the text link, including the line-ending character.

There are several ways to move a line-ending character to the outside of a text link. For example, use your Type/Text tool to click inside the text link and click the “Remove” button on the DesignMerge palette. Then, carefully select only the characters that you wish to have replaced by variable data, confirm you have not selected the line-ending character, and re-assign the variable link to the selected text.

TIP: DesignMerge will automatically exclude non-printing characters, such as a line-ending character, that are at the end of your selected text from being placed inside a text link if you turn on the “Smart Tags” preference (open the DesignMerge menu and select Preferences to access this preference).

Why does DesignMerge prompt for my database file each time I do a merge?

November 22, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

By default, DesignMerge will prompt for the location of the database every time that you do a merge operation. However, the setting can be changed under the menu commands DesignMerge => Preferences, by unchecking “Prompt for Database Each Time”. Once this setting has been changed, you will have to use the “Select Database” command to choose a new database file manually should you get a new version of it. If you replace the old database file with a new file of the same name, then DesignMerge will automatically detect that change and use the new file.
